The 2017 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) nominations are out and VSAFF films are again well represented.
Leading the way with 10 nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Lead Actor, is Noem my Skollie (Saturday, April 1, 7:30 pm), a gritty and thought-provoking Afrikaans-language film which was also this year’s South African Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
With eight SAFTA nominations, including two for Best Lead Actress (for both lead female characters), is Sink, an Afrikaans-language thriller which closes the 2017 VSAFF on Sunday, April 2 at 7 pm. Sink also received SAFTA nominations for Best Script and Best Editing.
Nobody’s Died Laughing (Sunday, April 2, 1:30 pm), which explores the life of Pieter-Dirk Uys, one of South Africa’s most important writers, satirists and activists, received four SAFTA nominations, including for Best Documentary Feature.
VSAFF is also thrilled each year to celebrate some outstanding South African short films, and this year is no exception. The Suit, (Saturday, April 1, 11:30 am), the first film adaptation of the classic and iconic South African short story, is up for Best Short Film at the SAFTAs.
The SAFTAs are March 16 in Sun City, South Africa. Here’s a complete list (PDF) of the nominees.
